While Scandinavian design is streamlined and modern, Stockholm is an incredible mixture of old European charm and modern Nordic culture.
This historic part of Stockholm will take you back to medieval times, where there has been a settlement since 1252. Walk through the winding roads and visit ancient churches, public squares and the Royal Palace. There are also plenty of bars and cafes.
The art collections at the museum may seem small compared to others in London, Paris and Italy, but the paintings on display are remarkable. If you love Ikea, visit the permanent exhibition of 20th-century Swedish design.
On display at the Vasa Museum is the Vasa, a 17th century warship that sank on its maiden voyage. It has been recovered, restored and almost completely intact.
