Travel Spotlight: Rio de Janeiro

The eyes of the world were on Rio de Janeiro last summer during the 2016 Olympics Games. Here are places to check out in 2017 if Rio captured your attention last year.

If you can get to Rio for Carnival, a five-day festival right before Ash Wednesday, do it. Think a bigger, louder and crazier Mardi Gras. There are parades, balls and street festivals. Colorful costumes, music and dancing will be a key component of every celebration.

Copacabana Beach

This stretch of beach is one of the most famous in the world. Millions of people visit each year, and there are always celebrations. Walk down the Copacabana Promenade to find shops, restaurants and bars.

Christ the Redeemer

One of Rio’s most prominent and recognizable landmarks, the statue of Christ the Redeemer stands on top of a mountain overlooking the city.

Sugarloaf Mountain

This peak on a small peninsula in the Atlantic offers great views of Rio’s beaches. You can reach the summit via cable car. Sugarloaf is also one of the largest urban rock climbing areas in the world.
